As of 2009, the population of the county was 25, 056 and had actually shown a 1% decline in residents since the year 2000. The racial makeup is 49.7% white persons and 48.2% African American persons. The male to female ratio is about 50/50. Approximately, there are 70% high school graduates in the county and 9.2% with higher education. The median home value is $64,300 and there are 10,630 housing units in the county. The median household income is $34, 012 with 23.4% living below the poverty level.

Interesting Note About Anson Real Estate

Steven Spielberg filmed most of The Color Purple in Wadesboro and a farmhouse in Lilesville. The town of Marshville in Union County was used for most of the town scenes. The film Evil Dead II was filmed in Wadesboro as well and the same farmhouse used in The Color Purple became the production office for the film.
