Asheboro, NC Real Estate’s History

Asheboro was founded on Christmas Day 1796. The city is named after Samuel Ashe, governor of North Carolina from 1795 to 1798. The city was originally settled in 1780 when citizens called for a more centralized county seat. The area has a long history of textile and furniture manufacturing, and still produces both today. Asheboro, NC real estate owners maintained steady growth through the 18th century due mainly to its county seat status. With the coming of the railroad in the 1890's the population exploded and began to double every ten years for the next 40 years.

The current population of Asheboro is just over 23,000 people. The population has seen a gradual increase over the last 50 years with the population increasing by about 1000 people every five years. Recent census data shows the growth trend continuing well into the 21st century. The median age of the city is 34 years old, and 52% of the populations are females. 65% of Asheboro' s population are employed.

Like all small cities in the Triad Region, Asheboro, NC real estate owners have seen their share of economic problems during the late 20th century. The robust history of the textile and furniture economy began to wane with jobs being outsourced overseas combined with a decrease in demand for domestic materials and goods. Asheboro, NC real estate owners decided not to take this lying down. Like many smart cities in the region a strong civic development plan was enacted to help offset economic decline. Introduced in 2007 the Asheboro 20/20 Development Plan was put in place to help shape Asheboro into "...a model community in North Carolina to live, work, and play." The idea being that Asheboro achieves this goal by 2020. Asheboro, NC real estate owners are well on their way.

Asheboro Zoo

An integral part of the plan involves The North Carolina State Zoo. The zoo is a huge tourist attraction and a source of great pride for the community. Over 700,000 visitors come annually to the zoo from all over the region, state, and country. The zoo has over 1100 animals and has 1,371 acres of viewing and habitat areas. It is the largest walk through zoo in the world. The zoo is also one of the largest employers of Asheboro, NC real estate owners.
