Atlanta Real Estate and History

Atlanta real estate is the largest in Georgia and is the state's capital. It is considered by many to be one of the most important business and transportation centers in the south eastern United States.  Hartsfield International Airport is one of the busiest airports in North America.  Atlanta was founed in 1837.  The population of Atlanta itself is approximatelyl 537,000, while The Atlanta Metropolitan Area is 8th largest in the United States with a population of approximately 5,700,000 residents. The Greater Atlanta area occupies 28 counties and approximately 6,000 square miles.

1837 was a momentus year for what later became known as Atlanta real estate.  The Western and Atlantic Railroad decided to build tracks that ended in northern Georgia.  The spot for the railroad station was name Terminus, the original name for Atlanta.  In 1843 what had become a real town was renamed Marthasville, in honor of the then governor's daughter. Only two years later the city was renamed Atlanta.

In 1860 Atlanta real estate had just over 9,500 residents, but it was still considered a significant city in Georgia.  Atlanta was generally conservative in its early years and for business reasons was originally not in favor of secession from The Union.  But in January of 1861 Atlanta joined the Confederacy and became a strategically important city in the Civil War.  As the war progressed, Atlanta became a major producer of war materials and with great employment opportunities, it population more than doubled in 4 years.

Indelably etched in the minds of movie goers, the book and movie Gone with the Wind described the horrific burning of the city of Atlanta by General William T. Sherman.  Originally, the army had planned to burn factories and transportation centers, but out-of-control soldiers burned far more than the targeted locations.  The city was evacuated and vast numbers of government, commercial and residential properties were destroyed.

After nearly total destruction, the railroads again led the way to a rebirth of Atlanta as a major hub.  Within four years of Sherman's destruction of Atlanta real estate, the four railroad lines had expanded to 15, and more than 150 trains arrived in Atlanta each and every day.  The beginning of Atlanta real estate as the hub of the new south had begun.  At one time it was described as the Chicago of The South.

Atlanta real estate suffered greatly during The Great Depression, but survived only to see its growth and strength expand greatly leading up to World War II.  During the war 800 new industries grew in Atlanta and over 1,200 international corporations had offices in the city.  Coca Cola became an international brand during World War II because they actively distributed their product to soldiers around the world for 5 cents a bottle.

In the 1960's, Atlanta real estate was a center of activity in the civil rights movement and was seen as very progressive.  In 1969 Maynard Jackson became the first American vice mayor.  In 1972 Andrew Young became the first black congressman from Georgia.  In 1973 Maynard Jackson became the city's first African American mayor.  The great spiritual leader of the civil right movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was centered in Atlanta.

In the mid-1960's Atlanta became a true big-league city when the Milwaukee Braves became the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falon's national football league team moved to the city.  A couple years later the Atlanta Hawks NBA basketball team moved to the city.  The Atlanta Motor Speedway is also a major sports venue in Atlanta real estate.

Today's Atlanta Real Estate

Today's metropolis of Atlanta real estate is a booming big city.  It also remains a major transportation hub in North America and the world.  The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is second only to Chicago's O'Hare airport in the number of take-offs and landings.  It averages approximately 80,000 flights and seven million passengers per month.

The MARTA rail line provides major transportation to commuters and visitors throughout much of Atlanta real estate, while massive freeway projects provide automobile transportation to the vast majority of citizens.

In the 1990s city boosters started calling Atlanta, the world's next great city.  It had become quite international with over 1,000 foreign corporations with offices in Atlanta real estate and 37 foreign consulates and trade offices in the city. Coca-Cola, CNN as the world's first 24 hour news station and UPS (United Parcel Service) were headquartered in Atlanta.  In addition, the international paper company Georgia-Pacific is headquartered in Atlanta, Home Depot was founded in Atlanta and Delta Airlines calls Atlanta its home.  The Center for Disease Control is headquartered in Atlanta real estate.

In 1996, Atlanta real estate showcased itself by hosting a highly successful summer Olympic Games. The awareness of the world was squarely focused on Greater Atlanta, Georgia.

Entertainment, arts and culture abound in Greater Atlanta real estate.  All of the surrounding communities have their own arts venues, while the core of Atlanta real estate has venues that include, but are not limited to the following:

As Greater Atlanta has expanded it now includes many towns and communities that have their own identities, but are more and more a part of the tapestry that is defined as Atlanta.  Georgia contains the second largest number of counties of any state.  Therefore, with Greater Atlanta real estate owners living in multiple counties and incorporated cities, residents here live in a widely decentralized collection of government entities.
