Dream Estate or Real Nightmare?

Posted by Jennifer Shin

Haunted HouseA spooky time may be ahead of you.  And I'm not talking about Halloween.

At any given time thousands of men, woman and couples, are looking to call one house their forever home (at least for a few years).  And they go from house to house, squealing and gushing about the beautiful cabinetry, brand new appliances and slick hard-wood floors.  Young buyers particularly may go unaware of the underworld of piping, mold and structural damage that can eat away at the joy of buying their very own home.

So, don't fall in love blindly with the first house you see with that 1930's antique chandelier.  Find a qualified home inspector to test the home for structural, mechanical and electrical damage.  How?  You can ask your Realtor or agent for a recommended inspector, or you can also visit The American Society of Home Inspectors or The National Association of Home Inspectors for more information.

And if you're selling, take the measures in advance to be able to assure buyers that there are no mysterious, hidden issues possibly transforming this dream home into a nightmare.  You may consider getting your home inspected before you start showing the house to prevent any uncomfortable situations with a potential buyer.

You can also check the home yourself, and make sure that while you are still there, you are maintaining the home in a safe and orderly fashion.  Make sure that there are no leaks around any exposed piping or faucets, and be up-to-date on the federal and state requirements for piping and electrical areas.  Have regular maintenance and check-up work done especially on heating systems to avoid any leakages.

If you are aware of what is required to pass a home inspection, you'll be fast on your way from spooky Halloween to gift-receiving Christmas cheer!
