Named for the Catawba tribe of Native Americans, the county was formed in 1842 from Lincoln County. After the Civil War, an annual event honoring its military began called the Old Soldiers Reunion. It is held the third week of August and continues to be the oldest patriotic celebration in the United States. The continuing celebration of the soldiers is reflected in the artisan furniture, quilting, pottery and music offered at the yearly event.
