Originally this area was laid-out to offer home lots to Duke University faculty and staff. The university would open 100 or so home sites and sell the lots to faculty and staff at one-third to one-half the cost of similar lots in non-Duke Forest areas around Durham. Therefore, nearly all homes in Duke Forest were originally built by faculty and staff.
As a result of academics and administrators building on these lots, there are few "cookie-cutter" homes in Duke Forest. No single developer or architect dominated construction of homes in this area. There is an eclectic collection of original designs, many from top architects and builders from the area. There are traditionally styled homes, solar homes, modern design, Tudors, single-story homes and exotic homes. Prices in Duke Forest generally range from $250,000 to $750,000. Duke Forest is in the Jordan High School, Githens Middle School and Hope Valley Elementary School district which are all part of the Durham County School district.
