Duke University is one of the top research universities in the entire country.  It is the major employer in Durham and one of the top employers in The Research Triangle area.  The Duke University Medical Center is also one of the top medical center in the United States.  Duke's power and resilience are one of the reasons that real estate in Durham has remained reasonably stable even during generally tough economic times since 2008.

To some people, Duke University may be best known as the home of the Duke Blue Devils basketball team.  A perennial powerhouse in NCAA basketball, the Blue Devils are supported by the famous "Cameron Crazies," who receive accolades as the most clever and raucous fans in the country.

But to people who know Duke University from a deeper perspective, Duke is a university with 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students.  It has 10 schools and 8 institutes.  The Duke University Medical Center is one of the top medical centers in the country.

Homes for Sale Near Duke University

Most undergraduates live on campus for their first two years and then move off-campus.  Recently, Duke University has announced plans to encourage more undergraduates to live on campus for their entire 4 year program.  Graduate students, on the other hand, live off campus.  There are many opportunities for apartments, condos and townhomes for rent, but many graduate students purchase homes while attending their programs, often for 5 to 8 years.  Durham real estate has been an execellent investment over the last 20 years, and although the average property value has decreased a modest 5% to 9% over the last two years, the economy remains strong and an investment in Durham real estate will likely result in growth in value over the next decade.

In addition to graduate students purchasing homes, thousands of faculty and staff live in neighborhoods within walking distance or a short drive.  Below is a brief discussion of areas close to the two campuses of Duke University.

Duke University East Campus

East Campus is the original home of Duke University, then called Trinity College.  In fact, Duke's undergraduate school is still called Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.  Duke's East Campus is bounded by Main Street, Buchanan Blvd., Broad Street and West Markham Avenue.

Homes within walking distance of East Campus are located in Trinity Park, Northgate Park and the Watts Hillandale area.  Buyers looking for urban lofts or condos near Duke should look to Downtown Durham's converted tobacco warehouses.  Immediately adjacent to Duke's East Campus are newly constructed "new urban development" homes that are lovely and have renewed the walkable neighborhoods of Durham.

Duke University West Campus

The West Campus of Duke University is where the graduate programs are housed, where Cameron Indoor Stadium and Wallace Wade Football Stadium are housed, where The Duke Chapel rises-up as a beacon to Durham and where The Duke University Medical School and Health Center reside.  This beautiful campus is on Duke and Durham bus lines and is within walking distance of a number of residential areas, although not as intimately close as are some neighborhoods near Duke East Campus.  Duke's West Campus is bounded by Erwin Road, Anderson Street, Duke University Road and Route 751 (also called Academy Road near Duke).

Over the last few years there have been some beautiful condominium (condo) and townhome projects built along Erwin Road, within easy walking distance of West Campus.  A little further out (easily within 15 minutes of Duke) are the neighborhoods of American Village, Croasdaile, Trinity Park, Stonehill, Hope Valley, Forest Hills and Downtown Durham.

Real estate in Durham is stable and there are many beautiful neighborhoods that can satisfy the needs of the first-time home buyer, graduate student or the professor or doctor who is looking for convenient, affordable and/or luxury living.

Duke Medical Center

In August of 2009 Duke University Medical Center announced a major expansion of its facilities in Durham.  The projected costs of the projects exceed $800,000,000.  Durham and surrounding areas are excited about the expansion.  Not only will it significantly enhance patient experience and increase the number of patients seen at the hospital, but it will also create thousands of temporary construction jobs and thousands of permanent jobs in the health care field.

The first two projects will be the Medicine Cancer Center and the Duke Medicine Pavilion, plus major renovations to existing facilities.  According to Duke information services, over 800,000 square feet of space will be added to the medical campus.  This expansion will include 160 intensive and intermediate care inpatient rooms, 16 new operating rooms, 130 new exam rooms and 75 infusion spaces dedicated to cancer patients and their care.

Duke University Human Resources

Duke University Human Resources is highly automated, with access to its HR information readily available on its Duke University HR web page.  Hundreds of jobs can be seen on these pages and the application process can be managed from this site.  Duke University is the largest employer in Durham County.  This expansion will not only build on its footprint in the area. Every year, with the influx of freshman, as well as thousands of graduate students and medical students, the area is abundant with people looking for jobs and looking for homes for sale and for rent.
