Durham County is one of the main counties that makes up what is commonly referred to as The Triangle. The name comes in part from the Research Triangle Park, a research and development business park located primarily withing southern Durham County.

It was designed to promote research and development and to be a place where graduates of the major universities could find high-paying jobs in areas of intellectual pursuit.
