Durham County is one of the main counties that makes up what is commonly referred to as The Triangle. The name comes in part from the Research Triangle Park, a research and development business park located primarily withing southern Durham County.

The Research Triangle Park was founded by leaders in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill as a clean industrial park. It was designed to promote research and development and to be a place where graduates of the major universities could find high-paying jobs in areas of intellectual pursuit. There are currently more than 50 major research and development organizations, including IBM, Glaxo-SmithKline, Ciba Geigy, Research Triangle Institute, The Environmental Protection Agency and others located in Durham County.

In the northern part of the county, in the Treyburn Business Park, companies like Becton Dickinson and Organon Technika have major research and manufacturing plants. Over 33,000 people are employed in these companies in Durham County.

The moderate climate in Durham County real estate is a major draw for many people moving from The North. Average temperatures in the winter months are 49 degrees for a high and 29 degrees for the low. During the summer months, average temperatures range from 89 during the days to 70 during the evenings. These moderate temperatures allow outside activities for citizens year-round. As an example, in The North, golfers put their sticks away in October and bring them out in April. Durham County Transportation
