Durham Real Estate and the Economy

Durham real estate and surrounding areas benefit greatly from Research Triangle Park because there are so many major employers, like IBM, Glaxo-SmithKline, The Environmental Protection Agency, Quintiles Transnational, Reichold Chemical, Research Triangle Institute and others who employ many of the graduates from the surrounding universities.

Durham Colleges and Universities

Durham real estate owners have access to two major universities. Duke University, with the Duke University Medical Center, is the largest employer in North Carolina after the state itself.  Duke may be known throughout the world as the home of the Duke Blue Devils basketball program, but  Duke University has established itself over the last 50 years as one of the nation's top private universities.

Duke has approximately 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and employs approximately 33,000 people in full and part-time positions.

North Carolina Central University is a historically black university which is part of the University of North Carolina system. One of NCCU's specialties is bio-tech training programs.  Durham real estate is home to more biotech companies than any other place in the state.  NCCU has nearly 9,000 students enrolled.

Durham real estate owners are exceptionally well educated since many of those university graduates endeavor to make the Bully City their home after graduation.  Its agricultural and manufacturing roots mix with its knowledge worker base of today to create a diverse population and gives Durham real estate owners a wonderfully broad array of experiences for people from all cultures and backgrounds.

Durham Public and Private Schools

Durham real estate has one public school system, The Durham Public Schools.  Neighborhoods and subdivisions are districted for specific schools, but Durham also boasts a magnet school system which allows parents to choose such programs from a wide range of programs.  Three magnet schools in Durham were recently recognized as Magnet Schools of America for their excellence.  Durham School of the Arts, R.N. Harris Elementary School and Club Boulevard Magnet Elementary School were recognized. Durham real estate  is also nearby to terrific private schools, such as Durham Academy, Trinity School, Duke School for Children, Immaculata Catholic School, Lerner Community Jewish Day School and numerous Charter Schools.

Durham Real Estate and Transportation

Durham is intersected by Interstates 85 and 40, offering easy road access to other states.  Interstate 40 intersects Interstate 95 one hour to the east and Interstate 77 one hour to the west.

Durham is 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, one of the most easily accessible major airports in the Southeast.

Durham has an excellent municipal transportation hub called Durham Station, with a county-wide bus system and a regional bus service, Triangle Transit.  This is also a fare-free city circulator bus called the Bull City Connector with 35 stops running from East of Downtown to the Duke University Medical Center.  Durham also has an Amtrak Station.  Durham invested more than $20 million in road improvements in 2010 and approved $20 million more for the coming years, so transportation by car is easy with only moderate traffic issues during rush hours during the week. Overall, Durham real estate is very accessible to other, neighboring areas.

Durham Shopping

Over the last 10 years downtown Durham real estate has re-emerged as a hot spot for business and for residential living.  New urban development of Durham real estate has been robust, especially with the revitalization of the Downtown area and repurposed historic tobacco warehouses and textile mills.  Former industrial structures are now office space, townhomes and condominiums.  Old storefronts have been opened with fine restaurants such as Rue Cler, Piedmont, 614 West Morgan Italian Eatery, Tyler's Taproom, Dos Perros, Revolution, Pop's Trattoria, Scratch Artisan Bakery and others.

Durham Arts and Entertainment

Durham is home to The Durham Bulls baseball team, the most popular AAA Baseball team in the world and the subject of the most famous sports movie of all time, Bull Durham, filmed in Durham in 1988.

In the fall of 2008 Durham opened one of the top theaters in the Southeast; The Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).  This modern theater seats over 2,400 people and hosts off-Broadway shows, as well as comedians and concerts year-round.  Durham supports The Arts, and much to the delight of Durham real estate owners, DPAC actually showed a profit in its first year.  The theater is of such quality that top shows and performers are choosing Durham over other venues.

Durham real estate owners have access to a wide array of  one-of-a-kind restaurants; Durham was name America's Foodiest Small Town by Bon Appetit in 2008.   Home to more than three dozen nationally recognized restaurants, Durham real estate has access to a vibrant mobile food culture offering chef-driven concepts without the dining room.  Visit the Durham Convention and Visitor Bureau website for a great run-down of Durham real estate’s most noted dining spots from fancy to fun.
