The history of Fuquay-Varina dates back over 4 decades when two towns merged. A Frenchman named William Fuquay discovered a spring in the mid 1800s while plowing his fields and soon marketed their healing properties. Around the same time, another nearby resident, JD Ballentine returned home from the Civil War and met Virginia "Varina" Avery. Varina was one of many southern ladies who had written to troops (including Ballentine) while they were away to help improve their moral. JD and Varina fell in love and when he became the new local postmaster, the building was named "Varina" in her honor. As the community around the post office grew, it also adopted the name Varina. Additionally, William Fuquay's springs were growing in popularity as people came to take advantage of the healing waters and that area came to be known as Fuquay Springs. Over the years, the two small communities continued to share growth and success and by the early 1960s, the merger into Fuquay-Varina was inevitable.
Today Fuquay-Varina residents enjoy the history and architecture of the town's early beginnings. Older real estate in town feature Victorian, Craftsman, and Colonial Revival homes. Downtown Fuquay is full of properties featured on the National Register of Historic Homes. As visitors stroll through downtown, they can't help but be charmed by the brick-accented sidewalks, lampposts, and wrought iron benches in front of thriving local businesses.
Away from the downtown center, Fuquay-Varina continues to grow and adopt a more modern look and feel. Bustling shopping centers and restaurants make it easy to avoid the commute into Raleigh for shopping, dining, or entertainment. The area is full of parks and green spaces for hiking, biking, and playing sports. With its excellent schools and easy 30 minute commute to Raleigh, purchasing a new home in Fuquay-Varina makes for an effortless and rewarding lifestyle.
