This metropolitan area has more than 1,600,000 residents, making it the 30th largest population center in The United States.

The Triad Economy

Historically, the Triad region of North Carolina was noted for its textile, tobacco and furniture industries.  Major corporations, like Hanes and International Textile Group are headquartered in The Triad.  Lorillard Tobacco and Reynolds American are based in The Triad.  Thomasville and Lexington Furniture companies are headquartered in High Point, known to many as "the furniture capital of the world."  As a result of so much manufacturing in the area, The Triad also became a major hub for trucking, rail and other forms of transportation.  In July of 2010 Caterpillar, Inc. announced it will be building an 850,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant in The Triad.

Over the last 20 years, however, the global manufacturing economy has hurt the textile and furniture industries, while health concerns have hurt the tobacco industry in the United States.  As a result, The Triad cities have initiated major projects to encourage technology and biotechnology companies to call The Triad home.  Dell computers moved a major computer assembly plant to Kernersville.  Winston-Salem has created the Piedmont Triad Research Park.  Local universities have worked together to create the Gateway University Research Park.  Burlington boasts having the headquarters for Labcorp, which is one of the most successful clinical laboratories in the entire United States.
