There are over 800 homes in Southern Village built in the mid-1990s through the early 2000s. There is a mix of single family homes, townhomes, condos and apartments. Lot sizes vary from .25 acre up to .7 acre. The size of homes vary from roughly 1800 sq ft up to 4800 sq ft. Most of the homes are build on alleyways and provide rear-entry garages.
Southern Village is within the Chapel Hill-Carrboro city school system. The Mary Scroggs Elementary School is located within Southern Village and only a few blocks from almost any home.
Southern Village is located on the Chapel Hill Transit bus line. It is located just off route 15-501 and is a few short minutes from I-40 providing easy access to all the Triangle has to offer.
Market Street, a town square style shopping plaza, is within walking distance from the entire Southen Village neighborhood. Market Street offers a variety of shops, restaurants and even a 4 screen theater called The Lumina.
There are a number of community parks including baseball fields, sand volleyball courts and basketball courts. Southern Village also offers over a mile of . Residents can also join the Southern Village Racquet and Swim Club for their pools and tennis courts.
