

Watts Hospital no longer exists. In its place is the North Carolina School of Science and Math, which took over the building in the 1980's. The school brings many of the smartest, most ambitious students in all of North Carolina to Durham for a special high school experience with peers.

In 1998, what is called Watts Hospital Hillandale became a National Historic District. Thus, the area is protected by the City of Durham historic district rules. Watts Hospital Hillandale celebrated its 100th birthday in 2008.
Most of the homes in the area were built from 1910 to the 1940's. The area has seen a great resurgence in the last 20 years, with a majority of the homes in terrific repair. As an example of the feel of this community in Durham, it has one of the most active Halloween celebrations in all of Durham, with many hundreds of people dressed-up for trick or treating each year.
The friendly neighborhood has a strong home owner's association and coordinated neighborhood watch.
There are a number of parks within walking distance of the neighborhood, including Oval Park, Indian Trail Park, Wesetover Park and Belmont Park. It is within walking distance of the Broad Street shopping district and the 9th Street shopping area. It is also within easy walking or biking distance from Duke University's East Campus.
The Watts Hospital Hillandale neighborhood is reasonably close to Northgate Shopping Mall to the north and Duke University's main West Campus to the south. The neighbhorhood is 5 minutes from major highway Route 85 and 15-501 and 10 minutes away from Route 40.
